Canadian Entrepreneur Named ‘Billionaire-to-Be’ with Net Worth of $650 Million and Growing

Stewart Butterfield has been dubbed a “billionaire-to-be.”

As part of Canadian Business’ annual list of the nation’s wealthiest people, the monthly magazine gave the Flickr and Slack founder a noteworthy sidebar. Pegging his net worth at a surprisingly specific $649 million—which factors in Slack’s recently achieved billion-dollar valuationCanadian Business believes Butterfield is well on his way to cracking the billion-dollar mark himself, which would put him in very elite company in Canada and render the Vancouverite one of the most successful Canadian startup founders of all time.

Slack in September raised $120 million in new investment in a round that was co-led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Google Ventures with the participation of existing institutional investors and new ones, including Yammer founder and former PayPal COO David Sacks. Launched publicly in February 2014, Slack is used by 30,000 active teams to send 200 million messages each month.

“The world is in the very early stages of a 100-year shift in how people communicate, and we’re determined to push the boundaries,” Butterfield is quoted as saying.

Given that Slack’s pace of growth has already shattered Canadian startup records, it’s probably not wild to suggest Butterfield isn’t finished making history.

Oh, and one lucky bidder can have lunch with Butterfield and donate to a local charity at the same time.
