WiMAX Service Launched in Portland

Posted by Karilyn Kempton on Tue, January 6, 2009 2:40 PM · Filed under Portland , Wireless , Telecom · No Comments

Portland became the first American city to get Clear-branded WiMAX service on January 6 - Clearwire calls Portland "the fastest unwired city in the West.. Clearwire recently gained control of Sprint's Xohn network to provide Clear-branded WiMAX service. Portland and Baltimore, MD are the only two pure WiMAX networks in the United States so far, with Baltimore still operating under the Xohm name.

"Today is a historic day for the evolution of mobile computing and communications services in Portland, and the U.S.," said Benjamin G. Wolff, Clearwire CEO. "Clearwire is reinventing wireless by delivering an unmatched combination of Internet speed and mobility. We're providing a valuable service designed to improve our customers' productivity and make their lives more enjoyable, wherever they happen to be in our coverage area."

Clearwire announced in early December that they have raised $3.2 billion for a nationwide WiMAX network, from Comcast, Intel, Time Warner Cable, Google, and Bright House Networks. WiMAX offers wireless broadband acess, data and telecommunications services, and portable connecvity. Clearwire had made some enthusiastic plans to upgrade its 46 pre-WiMAX markets in the near future, there has been speculation that upcoming WiMAX deployments might be slowed due to the financial crisis. Clear offers residential users wireless service with no installation, and mobile users only  need to plug in a mobile WiMAX-enabled USB modem to their laptop.  Many computer companies are announcing embedded WiMAX technology compatible with the Clear network in teh first half of 2009. Sprint is reselling access to its 3G network to Clear, which will allow 4G WiMAX devices to work even where there is no WiMAX.

Grand opening events are happening at Portland's three Clearwire retail stores on Saturday, January 10, with gift certificates and prize draws occuring. The stores are located at: 15th and Broadway, 92nd and Sunnyside (Clackamas Promenade), and Burnside and 23rd Place (Uptown Shopping Center).

Paystone shuts down online payments system

Posted by Rob Lewis on Tue, January 6, 2009 12:43 PM · Filed under Vancouver , Layoffs · 1 Comment

Vancouver's Paystone Technologies Corp announced on December 19th that they would be shutting down their online payments system.

Paystone would like to thank all members who have used and supported the Paystone Online Payment System over the past 5 years. Unfortunately, recent legislative and regulatory changes in Canada adversely impact Paystone's on-line business model, rendering continued operation impractical.

Paystone has been kicking around the Vancouver tech scene for years thanks to the deep pockets of Chairman Milton Wong. In an article published in SFU's aq magazine in 2003, Wong refered to his investment as a major financial commitment and to Paystone as a "very speculative, very creative" real time online payment solution company.

A lot has changed in the micropayment space over the past five years - check out this snippet from a Globe & Mail article from November 2003 titled Technology firms jostle for pocket change:

...Vancouver-based Paystone Technologies Corp. makes payments the normal way, one at a time, with money that customers have preloaded into a special account. President Alan Thompson says Paystone is talking to lots of big players-particularly in music and gaming.

Claiming nearly 700 active, though modest, merchant sites, the company has real-life bragging rights. You'll often find it, I discovered, in a face-off with PayPal for the customer's transaction. Paystone has just cut a potentially juicy deal to enter the burgeoning Chinese market, where paper money and coins still rule-and where consumer Internet commerce is just taking off.

There has got to be some ex-Paystone folks out there reading this - any idea why an early leaders like Paystone wasn't able to grab a share of the huge micropayments market?

Posted by Rob Lewis on Tue, January 6, 2009 10:22 AM · Filed under Seattle , Digital Media · 1 Comment

Seattle's Picnik - #2 on our January 2009 Seattle Startup Index - has had quite a year and to top it off they have been named to Time Magazine's 50 Best Websites.

Today they announced that their site visits from 2007 to 2008 exceeded company and industry expectations with a 1,400 percent increase in site traffic in the last year.

In December 2007, Picnik had 1.7 million monthly visits, with 631,000 unique visitors -- in December 2008, Picnik reached over 24 million monthly visits and 7.4 million unique visitors. From the most recent numbers, this translates to a month-to-month increase of 25 percent.

"Within the last year, the landscape for Web-based computing and online photo editing have changed dramatically and we think Picnik has been that change agent," said Jonathan Sposato, chief executive officer of Picnik.com. Digtial Media People to Watch in BC in 2009

Posted by Rob Lewis on Tue, January 6, 2009 9:40 AM · Filed under Vancouver , Victoria , Success Stories · 2 Comments

One of the benefits of blogging about technology in BC is the opportunity to meet and interact with innovative technology leaders and evangelists every day. During 2008, we had the pleasure of covering some great people, startups, and events and - even with our troubled economy - are excited about what 2009 promises. Techvibes put together a list of British Columbians in the Digital Media space this time last year that we thought were worth watching in 2008 and it was a hit - so we're doing it again for 2009.

Andre Charland – Nitobi – Charland's Nitobi Software has been providing enterprise web solutions and web-based software components since 1997 and were an early proponent of Ajax. Charland has spoken widely on Ajax, blogging, and web usability and had a seat on the Adobe On AIR Bus Tour in 2007 and again in 2008 when Adobe took to the tracks across Europe. On top of client work, Nitobi has been pushing the envelope with their own projects. Robot Replay is a web analytics tool that records how your visitors use your site and PhoneGap is a development tool that allows web developers to write apps for mobile devices with limited time and resources.

Michael Cole – Vivity Labs’ Fit Brains – Cole laid a solid foundation for Fit Brains and their online brain games in 2008. They kicked off the year with a successful Angel round of over $1 Million and got working on phase 1 of their commercial platform. Fit Brains now has 15 free games online and a slew of tools and features to keep players coming back - brain metric tools, an achievement system, community games, and leader boards. Thanks to agreements with a handful of leading US media companies (MSN, Lifetime TV, Viacom, and more); Fit Brains will be building on solid revenue numbers in 2009. What’s next for Cole & Fit Brains? More free games, platform improvements, and a serious look at international opportunities.

Rick Goossen – MakeGood – Entrepreneurial strategist and author Goossen has combined his passion for social responsibility with his knowledge of crowd sourcing and is due to launch MakeGood in early 2009. The MakeGood platform will allow companies to show-off their commitment to their community, the environment, and the world. Goossen’s goal is for MakeGood to be the Web’s #1 trustmark for Social Responsibility at a price point that is a fraction of what is being offering by old-school accreditations. Sounds disruptive – not surprising considering Calgary’s Cambrian House is a strategic partner.

Steve Hnatiuk - Yaletown Venture Partners – As a Co-Founder and General Partner, Hnatiuk will be heavily involved in deciding where their $65 Million (and counting) of new money in Yaletown Ventures II gets invested. Venture Capital money has been scarce locally and the timing of the initial closing of this second fund couldn’t be better. Yaletown Venture Partners has a history of making smart clean-tech and IT investments in Western Canada and with startup valuations low they have the opportunity to make a huge splash in 2009.

Ken Kwasnicki – Middlespot – Kwasnicki was a partner with Columbus Group back in 2001 when they were acquired by Telus. This time around, Kwasnicki has partnered up with Columbus Co-Founder Scott Brownlee to create Middlespot – a visual search interface. Middlespot launched in October and has already received some great coverage thanks to its intuitive search results that integrate traditional text results with screenshots and the ability to create shareable ‘workpads’. Check out their tutorial and look out for Middlespot in 2009.

Amielle Lake – Tagga – CEO and Co-founder Lake launched Tagga in July allowing anyone to create their own free SMS campaign. Since launch Lake has tweaked the business model and repackaged the technology into a hosted software solution for ad agencies and media publishers. While in private beta, the new platform has been pre-sold to agencies (such as Fjord - Cossette's digital arm) that will be able to offer mobile marketing solutions directly to their clients. An accomplished author, Lake used her deal-making experience to raise a healthy seed round for Tagga last spring and convince the former VP of Yahoo's Global Mobile Group to join Tagga's Board of Advisors.

Paul Lee – VanEdge Capital – The Ex-Electronic Arts Senior Exec is heading a new multimillion-dollar venture capital fund focused on the digital game development space. Along with EA Alumni Glenn Entis and Jason Chein, Lee plans to pick and choose investments from all facets of the digital media sphere with a focus on Vancouver. With startup valuations dramatically lowers compliments to the recent economic downturn, VanEdge General Partner Lee believes that now is the time to invest and is looking for individual and institutional investors to get into the game.

Colleen Nystedt – MovieSet –  MovieSet is an Internet portal that provides movie fans with "behind-the-scenes" access to the filmmaking experience and Nystedt is calling the shots as President & CEO. Nystedt’s startup had a blockbuster summer picking up awards and finding success at the venture capital box office.  Awards included being selected by AlwaysOn for their OnHollywood Top 100 Private Company award and being selected for a KPMG PICK 20 award as one of Canada’s Up & Coming Web 2.0 companies. Nystedt capped the summer off by raising $3.5 Million of a $5 Million financing round that included the Canadian arm of New York’s Rho Capital Partners and the BC Discovery Fund locally.

Danny Robinson - Bootup Labs –  In 2008, Robinson was singled out for his much anticipated launch of Strutta, which is now generating revenue with its new online competition platform and being run by co-founder Maura Rodgers. This upcoming year, Robinson will be focused on startup accelerator & fund Bootup Labs. The $5 Million VCC fund secured $1.3 Million of committed capital in the first month of fundraising and Robinson is on track to close the first $2 Million by end of February. There are currently 4 companies in the Lab - LayerBoom, LetsGoForDinner, AdHack, and QCDocs – and they plan on taking in 6 companies every 4 months. High quality digital media deal flow, here we come.

Todd Tessier - BC Renaissance Capital Fund -  In an effort to spark early stage innovation, the BC government set up the BC Renaissance Capital Fund in April 2008 and Tessier is at the helm. Tessier has secured six top-tier institutional venture capital fund managers to help attract market expertise and venture capital investment to BC. Tessier’s $90 Million Fund, along with Hnatiuk’s $65+ Million and Lee’s $100-200 Million, will go a long way to help early stage innovation in Vancouver in a tough economy.

Obviously this list could go on and on as there is a tonne of talent and cool projects going on in BC, so if you think we've missed someone that deserves some attention, please add them to the comments.

Yangaroo - Destiny Media showdown looming

Posted by Rob Lewis on Mon, January 5, 2009 11:12 PM · Filed under Toronto , Vancouver , Success Stories , Digital Media · No Comments

Looks like the battle between Toronto's Yangaroo and Vancouver's Destiny Media is far from over. Today Yangaroo announced that it has received allowance of its United States Patent Application #10/431,854 titled "Content Distribution System and Method" from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

"The allowance of this patent confirms YANGAROO as the foremost innovator in its field," said John Heaven, President and CEO of YANGAROO. "The formal Letters Patent grant is expected to follow shortly. This patent will provide us with another significant competitive advantage and will add substantial value to our company. The music and advertising industries understand and respect the value of intellectual property and we will continue to lead our sector through innovation and invention. We will maintain our focus on expanding our patent portfolio and plan to vigorously defend our intellectual property rights."

In October Destiny Media announced that it received a “Notice of Allowance” from the USPTO for their digital music distribution patents and Yangaroo reacted swiftly with a press release claiming that it would not impact their pending patents or infringement and defamation claims against Destiny. Looks like they were right. Stay tuned to see how Destiny Media reacts.

Either way, it's great to see Canadian companies lead the way in the digital delivery service space.

First Round Capital visits Vancouver for coffee

Posted by Rob Lewis on Mon, January 5, 2009 4:46 PM · Filed under Vancouver , Venture Capital , Events · No Comments

Philadelphia's First Round Capital just announced that they're coming to Vancouver to host an Office Hours event.

The First Round Capital team had such a good time, at our inaugural Office Hours, that we’ve decided to make it a semi-regular practice. Back in October, Josh Kopelman, Rob Hayes and myself met with more than 50 entrepreneurs. The energy from the event proved what we already knew: the economic downturn hasn’t dampened the entrepreneurial spirit.

On January 15th, we’ll be partnering with our good friends at W Media Ventures to host an Office Hours in Vancouver. Chris Fralic and Kent Goldman will represent First Round Capital, with Boris Wertz of W Media Ventures acting as the local host. And just like the original Palo Alto edition, we’d love to meet with entrepreneurs, people thinking about becoming entrepreneurs or folks who would like join a start-up. We’ll be available for a bunch of informal ~15 minute chats. Again, there’s no agenda. We’ll provide the napkins to write on and the coffee to keep you warm while you wait.

FRC Office Hours Vancouver takes place on Thursday, January 15th from 4-6pm at Agro Cafe at 1207 Hamilton Street in Yaletown. If you'd like to drop by, be sure to fill out this quick form - while it's not required, I'm sure it will help get you in the door.
