Comparisons: EQO vs. Tabrio

Highly capable phones and data plans open the opportunity to work around traditional voice calls through the power of VoIP. Today we compare two Vancouver based VoIP solutions that claim to offer better long distance and international text messaging rates that your traditional phone company.

Compatability: EQO makes use of an application on your phone, and is compatable with a wide varity of phones including Blackberries, Windows Mobile, LG, Nokia, Motorola, LG, Siemans, Palm, Samsung, and Ericsson. The iPhone is a notable omission from that list. Tabrio connects calls to your phone through a web browser, which any modern phone has to a better or worse degree. Both require on a data plan, though Tabrio’s voice calls still go through regular voice channels.

Pricing: Tabiro gives 2¢/min and 3¢/txt to Canada, 3¢/min and 9¢/txt to the US. EQO: 2.3¢/min and 10¢/txt to the Canada and US. International rates vary for both but are under 10¢ for major countries. EQO charges 1.2¢/min for calls between EQO users, Tabrio doesn’t have such functionality. Both have rate calculators on their site to figure it out ahead of time.

Ease of use: EQO’s application is fairly easy to use and well featured, and even integrates instant message, photo sharing, friend feeds, and Twitter. However, many of these features are dependent on your contacts also having EQO installed. Tabrio’s mobile web interface might not be highly featured, but it is quick and straightforward. Alternatively, you can also text the number to Tabrio, and they connect the call. Tabrio’s desktop software allows you to use the service from your computer, and sync contacts from Outlook.

Which service is better for you depends on phone compatibility and where you’re intending to call. Tabrio is the newer entrant and offers a bit more flexabilty with their voice service. EQO’s strength is in it’s mobile app and social features. For some instances, better rates might be found with the ubiquitous big VoIP player, Skype.
