Vancouver’s foodie community gets hot & bothered every January when Tourism Vancouver’s Dine Out Vancouver promotion kicks off. Thanks to the economic slowdown, the successful marketing program designed to boost business through the post-Christmas lull has recorded its highest participation ever with 187 restaurants on the slate.

Continuing on the cheap eats theme, Business in Vancouver’s Glen Korstrom covered a local Vancouver startup that is hoping to benefit from the trend.

Fortunately, new strategies to attract more diners have emerged. For example, restaurants can partner with Craig Baker’s revamped Letsgofordinner.com. Baker converted his website in September from a marketing venture to a high-tech version of Entertainment Publications LLC’s popular Entertainment Book.

Baker has thus far sold 400 membership cards at an introductory $5 price. Half of the proceeds go to charities.

Once consumers receive their membership card, they can go online to buy credits for various high-end Vancouver restaurants such as the Italian Kitchen, Sanafir or Coast. The credits are electronically credited to a member’s plastic card.

Letsgofordinner.com members have thus far bought 200 credits for an average price of $25. Each $25 credit is worth $50 at the specified restaurant for 90 days following the credit purchase. After that, the credit reverts to face value.

Letsgofordinner.com has seven participating restaurants and another 25 restaurants listed on their site as coming soon. According to their blog, this BIV coverage has resulted in a spike membership sign-ups as well as some interest from some large charities. They also note that they are about to close on a financing round through Bootup Labs.
