Late last year, Alberta Advanced Technology and Education announced their Innovation Voucher Pilot Program and today they announced that the first round of innovation vouchers totalling more than $5 million have been awarded to companies from 24 communities across the province. The vouchers are meant to help companies develop their innovative ideas into marketable products or services at labs, fabrication centers, business development centres and other organizations supporting innovation.

The proposed projects spanned the sectors of biotechnology, health, energy, environmental technologies, information and communications technology and industrial technologies. In total, 93 vouchers were awarded with a value of up to $10,000 and 86 vouchers were awarded with a value of up to $50,000. Among the $50,000 voucher recipients were DataGardens, MoboVivo, Psyko Audio Labs, and Tynt Multimedia.

Voucher must be used within nine months of issue at service providers approved by Advanced Education and Technology. Vouchers can be used to cover up to 75% of eligible project costs including specialized technical and professional services. The next call for innovation voucher applications in this two-year pilot program is expected to take place in fall 2009 with awards being announced in early 2010.
