It would be a shame if Rene Smid and Michelle Sklar didn’t get some public recognition for their contributions to the Calgary high-tech scene, as both have recently announced they are leaving their high-profile existing positions to set their sights on new horizons.
Rene Smid, Executive Director of Digital Alberta, in her nine years with the association, has become synonymous with the vibrant community that is the nexus of high-tech, arts and marketing in the province. The association is now looking for a replacement Executive Director as well as an Executive Assistant, which speaks to both how much Rene contributed, as well as the associations growing importance at home in the Alberta digital media landscape and putting Alberta on the map internationally. Here’s a link to her farewell letter. Rene has joined XPAN Interactive, North America’s leader in the development of public transportation e-learning solutions. She will be managing client relations and overseeing operations. Her first project, a three year Toronto Transit / Bombardier contract.
Michelle Skar has been at bnetTV for 7 years, and as Producer and Talent, has crisscrossed the globe both in front of the camera and behind. Although she is a passionate voice for Calgary companies, her bigger contribution helping entrepreneurs around the world get recognized in the global wireless industry is unequalled, covering events like 4G World, CES, TEDx yyc, GSMA, CTIA … you name it. She lead bnetTV.com in owning the space of on-line broadcasting in Emerging Technology industry. She figures she’s done about 3,500 interviews in the past 3 years like this one from 2010 GSMA Barclona for Mob4Hire (of which I am CEO, he said as he continues to shamelessly plug his company). Michelle tells me she is actively seeking new and exciting opportunities as an “agent of innovation” to which I would also add “agent of network connections!” Michelle’s is on LinkedIn for those that want to get in touch.
Being in the high-tech industry in Calgary is tough enough living in the shadow of the massive Oil & Gas business, let alone making your mark as a woman in a male-dominated industry. Kudos, thanks and all the best in their new journeys to both Rene and Michelle!
