Staggering percentage of Canadians use Internet
The 2009 Canadian Internet Use Survey was released recently. Sponsored by Industry Canada, the survey was conducted in November and included more than 23,000 Canadians aged 16 and older.
Three in four women used the internet to research health and medical conditions compared with two in three men. One in three men used the internet to research investments and one in five women did so. More than half were online for more than five hours per week (+6% from 2007).
10% more people aged 45+ used the internet than in 2007, up to 66%. This age group has accounted for well over half of new internet users since 2007. Almost 95% of people with household incomes of $85,000 or greater used the internet in 2009, but only 56% of those with household incomes below $30,000 used the internet.
Online shopping on the rise, but it’s not on big box store sites
The above survey also outlined shopping usages among internet users. Online shopping is a growing trend, with 50% of Canadians using the internet to order goods or services in 2009, and 67% engaging in online banking or electronic bill payment.
Where’s the shopping coming from? Hitwise recently compiled a list of the hottest keyword terms for online shopping. Kijiji, Craigslist, and eBay dominated the list (1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively), with Canadian Tire the only big-box store squeezing onto the list at number six.
