Google, everybody’s favourite internet search giant (aside from the Bingster bandwagoners), this week will launch its new image search engine. Its last major update was almost a decade ago, back in 2001 – an eternity in internet time, but the search engine has maintained relevance and dominance on the basis of “if it ain’t broke, why fix it?”
The new Google Images Search will put up to 1,000 images on the first results page, and implement a new image-based ad format.The new look is designed to reduce the number of clicks it takes for a user find the image he or she is looking for, as well as to provide more information about a particular image without having to click through to the result.
Using something called “infinite scroll” to navigate down the page, Google Images Search will now return up to 1,000 images on a single page. The company also built a very handy thumbnail preview that pops up when you hover over a given image. The preview with provide a searcher with information such as the URL where it is located.
Google also announced that advertisers on Image Search pages will be able to insert an image into their text ads. The idea is that such ads will be more relevant and catchy, thusly enticing more users to click on those ads, thusly generating more traffic for Google’s advertisers, and, thusly, generating more revenue for the search company.
All users will experience the new Images Search by week’s end, the company has said.
