U.S. passes law to legalize mobile device jailbreaking

In the U.S., pwners of Apple’s iPhone will be able to deliberately break electronic locks on their devices in order to download applications that have not been approved by Apple.

In addition to jailbreaking, other exemptions announced are:

  • The allowance people to break technical protections on video games to investigate or correct security flaws.
  • The allowance of owners of used cell phones to break access controls on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers.
  • The allowance of certain film and education sub-sectors to break copy-protection measures on DVDs so they can embed clips for educational purposes, criticism, commentary and noncommercial videos.
