amber alertOntario’s Amber Alert program has created a Facebook page to expand its reach to find missing children. Quoth The Globe and Mail:

The page will broadcast Amber Alerts issued in the province, and users who subscribe to the page will receive alerts when a child has been abducted.

Provincial police Commissioner Chris Lewis says when a child goes missing it’s critical to get information out to the public fast.

Facebook Canada’s managing director Jordan Banks says it’s a viral means to spread the word when a child needs help.

Given that Facebook has more than 500 million active users worldwide, including 15 million in Canada and more than seven million in Ontario, it makes sense, especally considering how little effort is required to manage a page on the social network.

Canada is the first country where the Amber Alert program is on Facebook, but Ontario isn’t the first province: New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island also have Amber Alert Facebook pages.
