When the Vortex Video Game Competition kicks off on January 19th, competitors will be giving it all to out-do each other in the eyes of the judges. But for the winner of Vortex, this will just be practice. Because the grand prize at the upcoming competition is the chance to play the game for real.
What does that mean? That means that the winner of Vortex 2011 will be given a one-year development period at Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone (DMZ) in addition to cash prizes. It’s hoped that the event winner will be able to use this period to get their game truly ready for the real-life market and the competition for gamers’ hard-earned dollars.
Now in its sixth year, the four-day Vortex Conference gives young videogame entrepreneurs the chance to receive valuable mentoring and compete with their peers in the fast-growing video game industry. This is the first time, however, that any competitor will receive ongoing support for their entry after the competition concludes.
“We are pleased to be able to offer young entrepreneurs in Canada’s digital media industry the opportunity to develop and actually take their product to market,” said Valerie Fox, director of Ryerson’s DMZ in a press release. “The DMZ’s mission is to facilitate commercialization of innovation led by the best and brightest young people in the country. Partnering with Vortex allows us to extend our reach to assist young people in the gaming industry.”
