It became a recent trend, particularly when our loonie eclipsed the greenback, to make a day trip south to the United Stated of America for some hardy bargain shopping.
But now more Canadians than ever are doing this from the comfort of their homes. According to a recent survey conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of Visa Canada, 34% of Canadian online shoppers say they are likely to shop online at American retailers to take advantage of deep discounts offered on Cyber Monday, up 6% from last year.
Furthermore, 30% of Canadian online shoppers are planning to spend more online this year than last. On average, Canadians expect to spend $262 online, up from $242 in 2010. Male shoppers will be the bigger spenders at $272, with women slightly behind at $253. Atlantic Canadians ($315) and Ontarians ($274) are the regions with the highest expected online spend.
At 58%, clothing and accessories are the most popular online purchases for Black Friday and Cyber Monday shoppers, followed by books (51%) and movies and music (40%). But its tech—computers, tablets, etc.—that the most money will be spent on.
“Over the past few years we have seen a steady increase in the number of Canadians who look for deals south of the border on Black Friday and Cyber Monday,” said Stephanie Wallat, Business Leader, Ecommerce, Visa Canada.
