Canada’s federal government is preparing to launch a spam reporting centre aimed at cracking down on illegal and annoying calls, texts, email, and social network messages. The private sector will collaborate with the government to establish and operate a facility that will bring Canada up to par with international spam-reduction standards.
The Canadian government believes spam is an increasing threat to the country’s economy, suggesting that it undermines consumer confidence in e-commerce. It has allocated $700,000 annually for the SRC.
Tens of millions of spam emails are sent daily. Consulting Neil Schwartzman calls Canada’s lack of crackdowns on spam is “unbelievable.” Anti-spam legislation that passed in 2010 has yet to come into effect and the SRC does not have a concrete timeline in place.
