The latest ranking of Canada’s top 100 employers has been released. As usual a decent amount of technology companies have made the list, although there are a few notable exceptions.
For example, Research In Motion, which has of course made the list before, is absent. And while Telus and SaskTel made the list, Rogers and Bell did not.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the best tech companies to work for in Canada. (Note that we didn’t include US companies that simply have Canadian offices or subsidiaries, such as Xerox and 3M.)
1. Digital Extremes. Founded in 1993, this Ontario-based game development studio has 182 full time employees in Canada. It’s a very young company with an average age of 32 but also a male dominated one with only 22% of the workforce being female. It’s a great place to work because it has a brand new state-of-the-art office, is growing steadily, and offers an array of employee perks.
2. OpenText. This is one of the bigger companies on the list, employing more than 1,300 full-time workers in Canada. It’s an older company, founded in 1991 in Waterloo, and its average employee age is also higher at 41. OpenText offers competitive salaries and solid benefits for workers.
3. Telus. The biggest on the list by far, Telus employes nearly 30,000 full- and part-time employees in Canada. It’s 40% female, much higher than Digital Extremes or OpenText, but you also risk being just a cog in the machine. Telus is a good place to work because it has a highly accessible head office in downtown Vancouver and allows many employees to work from home.
4. Yellow Pages. Perhaps the most surprising entrant on the list, this antiquated penny-stock company employs 2,700 full-time workers in Canada. It’s the only company on this list that employs a majority of women (60%). It’s noted for creating new jobs in the digital space, but keep in mind that its traditional publishing business is shrinking rapidly. Definitely the least stable company on this list – but it does have some cool perks like bicycle parking and office shower facilities.
5. Shaw. This telecommunications company employs over 13,000 Canadians, who are on average 45 years old and mostly male. It makes the list because of profit sharing incentives, new parent support initiatives, and generous pension plans. Headquarters are in Calgary.
6. SaskTel. Yep, half the companies on this list are telcos. Evenly split between males and females, SaskTel’s nearly 4,000-strong workforce enjoy the perk of three weeks’ vacation time after just one year. Its benefits and compensation packages are also rated as “very good.” The only downside is that the offices are in Regina.
