Today Quebecor Media’s Videotron pledged $2.5 million and an initial 10-year commitment to back the creation of a hub of technological innovation and enterprise in Montréal. Videotron’s significant support will give entrepreneurship in Montréal a major boost, helping an entire community achieve its full potential and giving some of its amazingly talented members a chance to shine.
The City of Vancouver is hoping a similar sugar daddy sponsor will step up and help establish an entrepreneurial hub on the West Coast. We’ve learned that Vancouver has issued a Request for Expressions of Interest for the operation of “an acceleration facility and entrepreneurial hub with the vision of providing world-class programs and services for early stage technology companies and social enterprises in Vancouver.”
We think it’s great news to hear that the city is opening up a competitive bidding process rather than moving ahead with one proponent.
Readers may recall that Mayor Robertson had signed a memorandum of understanding with US startup accelerator Plug and Play in 2010 to do exactly this.
