StratPad won big at Startup Canada’s Bridging the Financial Literacy Gap event in Ottawa this week.
The startup, with offices in both Victoria and the US, took home both the Financial Literacy Startup Award sponsored by Intuit Canada and the People’s Choice Award. Other finalists for the awards were Scott Annan of Accel.io and StartupPlays, Mike Lee of Fundica, and Mathew Georghiou of MediaSpark and GoVenture.
The awards recognize startup technologies that help entrepreneurs improve their financial literacy—a recent study conducted by Intuit Canada that revealed 83% of Canadian small business owners have only a basic (or lower) grasp of financial fundamentals. It’s cited as a major factor influencing startup survival rates.
StratPad creator Alex Glassey delivered a pitch at the event, which featured presentations by Maxime Bernier, Minister of State for Small Business; Sophia Leong, Director of the Telfer Executive MBA Program; and Jeff Cates, Managing Director of Intuit Canada. The event also included a panel discussion with Julia Deans of the Canadian Youth Business Foundation, Lance Laking of MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund, and Gary Rabbior of Canadian Foundation for Economic Education.
