This week, the Intel Developer Zone opened in Waterloo.

The zone is a lab for digital media developers based in the Communitech Hub, providing them with access to Intel technology and platforms and underscoring Intel’s “longstanding commitment to Canadian innovation and the digital economy.”

According to Intel, the zone will act as both a hardware and software centre. There will also be a seminar series intended to help drive innovation and share knowledge.

“Intel has long been part of the innovative technology cluster in the Waterloo region, and we are excited to expand our presence there with the Intel Developer Zone. This marks an important Canadian addition to our global strategy of research and development,” says Graham Palmer, Canada Country Manager of Intel. “This lab will support innovative developers in the region by providing them with access to software developer tools, platforms, and expertise to enable the development of technology for the future.”

“The Intel Developer Zone is a welcome addition to the Hub,” noted Iain Klugman, CEO of Communitech. “We bring together technology startups, academics and multinationals such as Intel to boost digital media entrepreneurship and innovation. Intel’s presence will give the developers at the Hub greater access to platforms and technology—helping them to expand and thrive.”

The Communitech Hub is a 44,000-square-foot digital media innovation center that brings entrepreneurs, multi-national companies and academic institutions together under one roof to build global digital media companies. The Hub is home to more than 120 companies.

“With the digital media and mobile computing sectors among the fastest growing in the world, there is tremendous opportunity for Ontario’s emerging companies to compete,” added Reza Moridi, Ontario Minister of Research and Innovation. “The Province of Ontario supports the Communitech Hub as part of our plan to make innovation a building block of Ontario’s economy. Intel’s commitment to establishing its developer lab here will support the growth and innovation that is driving our economy forward.”
