OMERS Ventures, the venture capital investment arm of the OMERS pension plan, announced today that Kent Thexton is joining its team as Managing Director.

In this role, Thexton will be responsible for leading investment activities in the North American market focusing on high-growth companies in the technology, media, and telecommunications sectors, according to OMERS, one of Canada’s most active venture capital firms.

“Kent is an extremely strong strategic thinker with in-depth knowledge of the mobile and technology markets,” said John Ruffolo, CEO of OMERS Ventures. “He has experienced multiple successes in both operational and founder roles at large corporations and entrepreneurial ventures.”

Thexton has spent 25 years in founder and operational management positions at growth companies globally, including as president and CEO. He is currently a board member and consultant for “some of Canada’s largest and most successful technology companies,” according to OMERS.

Founded in 2009, OMERS Ventures has been involved in Canada’s largest two VC rounds. It was an existing investor in HootSuite an participated in that company’s $165 million Series B. It was also a lead investor in Shopify’s $100 million series C.
