A Facebook scientist has apologized for performing an experiment that involved influencing the mood of nearly 700,000 social network users by modifying their news feeds without them knowing—a move that prompted ethical concerns following the publishing of the paper.

“My co-authors and I are very sorry for the way the paper described the research and any anxiety it caused. In hindsight, the research benefits of the paper may not have justified all of this anxiety,” Facebook data scientist Adam Kramer posted on his Facebook account Sunday afternoon.
