The National Research Council’s computers were targeted by Chinese hackers, the federal government has confirmed.
The attack was stopped, according to the government, but it will take security and network experts up to a year to implement a more secure system.
The attack was launched by “a highly sophisticated Chinese state-sponsored actor,” according to the federal government’s chief information officer.
The NRC’s computer networks from been isolated from the government’s IT network as a precaution, according to a statement from the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat.
“Every step is being taken to minimize disruption,” the statement reads.
