Codecademy Eyes Expansion with $30 Million Invesment

The online coding learning service Codecademy announced it has raised $30 million in series C investments. The web-based services boasts 24 million users worldwide and currently offers courses for anyone interested in learning HTML, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, Angular and more. Top of mind for CEO Zach Sims with this investment is to expand course language offerings. He also plans to grow the content and optimize the entire platform for mobile.

Codecademy leveraged both returning investors and Naspers Venture arm. “With millions of monthly users, and more than 50 percent of those outside the U.S., there is a great opportunity in partnering with Naspers to expand our business to deliver a wider breadth of courses in more languages and new geographies to create an education that allows anyone to access economic opportunity,” said Zach Sims, the company’s CEO.

“Since we founded Codecademy in 2011, we have seen an explosion of interest in learning to code as a key component of a 21st-century education,” said Sims. The company is up against a myriad of competition in the code learning space from both online and in-person players including Lynda.com, Code School, and BrainStation.
