Tech Titans Join US Government in Plan to Crack Down on ‘Scourge’ of Robocalls

A myriad of technology companies are joining the US government in a bid to crack down on notorious “robocalls.”

The army includes several tech giants, such as Alphabet, Apple, and Verizon, as well as BlackBerry, Comcast, and AT&T.

Together, they form the Robocall Strike Force. Aligned with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, this army will develop new tools and solutions to end the “scourge” of automated, prerecorded telephone calls, according to FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler.

Robocalls, say experts, are infamously difficult to stop, as the telemarketers and scam artists behind them constantly use new tricks and technologies to stay ahead of regulators. Currently, the FCC does not require phone providers to offer robocall blocking. However, the organization does encourage providers to offer such services to customers for free.
