Tesla Boosts Battery for Model S, Bringing Ludicrous Mode Acceleration Down to 2.5 Seconds

Electric car maker Tesla Motors said today it will launch a 100 kilowatt hour battery for its Model S and Model X vehicles.

As a result of the battery boost, expected to arrive late next month, the Model S will be able to accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in as little as 2.5 seconds.

That speed renders the Tesla model the third-fastest accelerating car ever produced, behind only the Porsche 918 Spyder and LaFerrari—and since those cars can’t be bought new anymore, the Model S is officially the fastest available on the market today, ahead of all combustion engines.

The battery upgrade for Model S owners—which will not only add speed, but also extend range to 315 miles—will cost a cool $20,000.

The Model S is now the first electric car on the market to exceed 300 miles of range.
