Rumors Stir of Apple’s Potential Acquisition of McLaren

Apple may be about to up its automotive game with one the world’s leading super-car companies. The tech giant is reportedly in talks with UK based supercar manufacturer McLaren about a possible £1.5 billion acquisition.

This highly speculative deal could shake up the technology and automotive industries, demonstrating Apple’s clear ambition to develop technology for electric and automated vehicles.

Apple has also reportedly approached McLaren about a strategic investment, according the to Financial Times which first reported the story. This possibility, however, was refuted by McLaren in a statement:“We can confirm that McLaren is not in discussion with Apple in respect of any potential investment,” the company said.

The potential acquisition of McLaren would be Apple’s biggest deal since the purchase of the Beats headphone bran for £2.3 billion in 2014.

McLaren builds supercars which retail for up to $1 million, but also develops technology for the healthcare, energy and transport industries, something Apple is certainly eyeing in this deal, though they have not confirmed nor denied the rumors saying it “does not comment on rumours or speculation”.

Tim Cook, the chief executive of Apple, has never publicly acknowledged the project.
