Facebook Releases Stand-Alone Events App with Calendar & Maps

Following the success of Facebook’s Messenger, which now boasts over one billion users, the social media giant is breaking off another piece of core functionality. Events By Facebook is a stand-alone iOS app (Android is on the way), meant to serve the more than 100 million daily users of the in-app feature.

Here’s how it works:

When you open Events, you can quickly catch up on new events your friends are interested in, recently-announced events by the Pages you like, and updates from events you’re already connected to.

The app allows you to browse event recommendations based on time, location and interests. An interactive map allows you to see events taking place in your area and even in other cities in case you are planning a trip. The built-in calendar tracks all of the events and availability, syncing with existed events on your phone.

Just a warning that actions take within the events app are also visible on Facebook – so this is still very much a public social media tool.

The app is available today in the US on iOS only and will roll out on Android “soon”.
