Uber Launches Self-Driving Cars in San Francisco – Without Permit

Three months ago Uber launched its first real-world test of its self-driving cars in Pittsburgh. This week Uber brought that same vehicle model to San Francisco.

Volvo and Uber signed an agreement earlier this year to spend $300 million to develop a fully autonomous car that will be ready for the road by 2021, though the deal is not exclusive as Uber plans to partner with other manufactures in its race for autonomy.

“Expanding our self-driving pilot allows us to continue to improve our technology through real-world operations,” says Uber. “The promise of self-driving is core to our mission of reliable transportation, everywhere for everyone.”

Interestingly, Uber has launched self-driving cars in San Francisco without obtaining a testing permit to do so.

“We have looked at this issue carefully and we don’t believe we do,” Uber says.
