Apple Paid App Store Developers $20 Billion in 2016, Up 40%

Apple’s App Store had a strong year in 2016. The company paid a staggering $20 billion to developers through the year, up an impressive 40% over 2015.

Since the App Store launched in 2008, Apple has paid developers a total of more than $40 billion. Apple also noted that New Year’s Day, with $240 million in app purchases, was its best single day ever for the App Store.

“2016 was a record-shattering year for the App Store, generating $20 billion for developers, and 2017 is off to a great start with January 1 as the single biggest day ever on the App Store,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

In December, more than $3 billion in purchases were made on the App Store, led by Nintendo’s Super Mario Run, which made history with 40 million downloads in just four days.

The App Store is available in 155 countries.
