Gorilla Glass Leaps from Phone Screen to Car Windshield

Corning, whose Gorilla Glass became famous for making smartphone screens durable, has began making glass for cars.

Or at least its plans to: Corning at CES 2017 in Las Vegas unveiled a “glass-enabled concept car,” which employs a windshield that extends into the sunroof, as well as lights and interior dashboard coated in Gorilla Glass.

“By bringing Corning Gorilla Glass to the automotive industry, Corning is delivering lighter, tougher, and more optically advantaged solutions, enabling improved fuel efficiency, and a safer, more enhanced user experience for both drivers and passengers,” said Marty Curran, executive vice president and innovation officer.

The concept car boasts augmented reality capabilities, effectively turning areas of the windshield into a layered screen that can provide real-time updates on traffic and fuel efficiency.

“Corning’s leading position in mobile device cover glass has provided an excellent launch pad for glass solutions enabling smart-phone like connectivity in cars,” Curran noted.

No word on when Gorilla Glass might actually be implemented in a working vehicle.
