Apple May Launch Augmented Reality Glasses This Year

We know that Tim Cook is interested in augmented reality. And we know Apple is looking for a hot new product to rejuvenate its stagnant lineup.

So perhaps this rumor is true: according to Silicon Valley veteran Robert Scoble on Facebook, Apple and Carl Zeiss AG “are working on a light pair of augmented reality/mixed reality glasses that may be announced this year.”

Scoble was light on details, but says the rumor was confirmed to him by a Zeiss employee. He also noted that Zeiss had no AR product at its CES booth in Las Vegas despite being in the AR area of the show.

We all know that Google Glass flopped a few years ago, and Snap’s spectacles haven’t exactly blown up. But as virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift and Daydream begin to enter the mainstream, the time may be more appropriate to launch this type of device. At the very least, we’re curious to see Apple’s take on AR.
