“To Build the World We Want”: Mark Zuckerberg Rethinks Facebook’s Mission

This week Mark Zuckerberg published an extensive open letter, the core message of which was that Facebook’s mission and values are heading in a new direction.

“Progress now requires humanity coming together not just as cities or nations, but also as a global community,” Zuckerberg writes. “In times like these, the most important thing we at Facebook can do is develop the social infrastructure to give people the power to build a global community that works for all of us.”

He continues:

For the past decade, Facebook has focused on connecting friends and families. With that foundation, our next focus will be developing the social infrastructure for community—for supporting us, for keeping us safe, for informing us, for civic engagement, and for inclusion of all.

Zuckerberg lays out five aspects of the community he wants to help cultivate: supportive, safe, informed civically engaged, and inclusive—each of which he touches on in detail in his letter.

“Our goal is to strengthen existing communities by helping us come together online as well as offline, as well as enabling us to form completely new communities, transcending physical location,” he says. “By increasing the diversity of our ideas and strengthening our common understanding, our community can have the greatest positive impact on the world.”
