YouTube TV Debuts, Offering Traditional Television ‘For the YouTube Generation’

YouTube is launching a major new service called YouTube TV, which the company describes as “live TV without all the hassle.”

“Unlike online video, people can’t watch TV when they want, on any screen and on their terms, without commitments,” Christian Oestlien, Product Management Director, wrote online. “Well, we’ve got some good news.”

YouTube TV, for $35 per month with no contract, will include live streaming from several major networks, including ABC, FOX, and NBC, as well as sports networks and other cable channels—more than 40 in total.

The service, coming “soon” to major US markets and later the rest of the country, also includes a cloud DVR with no storage limits that can store recordings for up to nine months.

In addition, YouTube TV can be experienced on any screen, including mobile and desktop, as well as on a traditional television screen through Chromecast. Both iOS and Android will be supported.

“With so much great content available on TV, we’re thrilled to build an experience that lets you enjoy it as easily as you watch YouTube,” Oestlien said. “We can’t wait for you to tune in.”
