Does Tesla Have Plans to Launch a Music Streaming Service?

Tesla is considering launching a music streaming services, according to industry insiders.

The rumor, first reported by Recode, suggests that Tesla has been in touch with “all of the major labels about licensing a proprietary music service.” The service would be included with car purchases.

The idea is sort of cool—a pre-bundled music streaming service comes with your Tesla—but there doesn’t seem anything wrong with deeply integration an existing, established platform like Spotify or Apple Music, which already have tens of millions of users and just as many songs.

Tesla also does not have reach, even as far as car integrations are concerned. The company sold just 76,000 vehicles in 2016, compared with about 6.6 million for Ford and around 10 million for GM.

Spotify has more than 100 million active users, including over 50 million paying subscribers. Apple Music has 29 million subscribers.
