Tesla Adding More City Supercharger Stations
Tesla drivers who rely on charging stations to power their vehicles will soon be able to charge their cars faster than ever in major cities.
The all-electric vehicle company announced today their plans to install Tesla Superchargers in urban centers, beginning with Boston and Chicago that will respectively get eight and ten charging stations.
“As part of our commitment to make Tesla ownership easy for everyone, including those without immediate access to home or workplace charging, we are expanding our Supercharger network into city centers,” wrote the company in a blog post.
Tesla said the charging stations will be set up in supermarkets, shopping centers and downtown districts. The stations will have the same pricing as existing Superchargers, a fee that remains lower than the cost of gas or diesel. Tesla reports that the cost to charge a Model S to run 1500 km is $56 USD where as gasoline would cost $195 USD for the same distance.
In addition, the company announced that the urban located Superchargers stations are designed to charge multiple cars at the same time and deliver a rapid 72 kW of power to each car under an hour.
“This means charging speeds are unaffected by Tesla vehicles plugging into adjacent Superchargers, and results in consistent charging times around 45 to 50 minutes for most drivers,” said Tesla who call their Superchargers the world’s fastest charging stations.
Tesla currently has 951 Supercharger stations open or soon-to-be-open across the world, a network of 6,550 electric vehicle chargers.
