Canadian Campaign to Take a Moment of Silence on Social Sites

A new campaign wants Canadians to extend the moment of silence on Remembrance Day to their social media feeds.

For nearly 100 years, people across Canada have honoured fallen soldiers on November 11 by taking a minute to pay their respects. But when in transit, in the middle of a class or even at the gym, finding a quiet moment isn’t necessarily granted.

Camp Pacific, a Vancouver-based creative agency, has created the Online Moment of Silence to automatically share a ‘silent post’ this Saturday to disrupt the photos, videos and messages shared on the social feeds.

“Without the help of formal events or assemblies, many young people forget to pay their respects with a moment of silence on Remembrance Day at 11 a.m.,” said Greg Kietlyka, copywriter at Camp Pacific.

“We wanted to ensure that anyone checking their feeds at this time was reminded to take a moment to remember those who have lost their lives to conflict, past and present,” he added.

These are the automated posts Camp Pacific hopes Canadians will sign up for to flood social feeds with the blank posts on November 11.

The company is letting Canadians sign up online to schedule an automated blank post on their Twitter or Facebook account on November 11 at 11 a.m. in their time zone. The all-white image will be hashtagged with #ShareYourSilence.

Camp Pacific hopes the digital activation will garner enough participation to silence Facebook and Twitter feeds alongside the traditional moment of silence.

The campaign has received support from Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly, The Royal Canadian Legion BC/Yukon Command and Saskatchewan Command, and The Vimy Foundation.
