Apple TV Now Streaming Amazon Prime Video, Live Sports

Apple TV owners in over 100 countries will finally be able to stream thousands of shows and movies in Amazon’s video library.

Prime Video arrived in the App Store this morning, half a year after the streaming service was first announced by Apple. The Prime Video app can be downloaded on the latest Apple TV 4K and previous generations too.

“Amazon Prime Video is one of the most eagerly anticipated apps to come to Apple TV, so we’re excited to bring all of that great content to customers,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior VP of internet software and services.

Prime members can access the streaming service’s original programming from their iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, bringing the total searchable TV episodes and movies on Apple devices to 1.3 million.

In addition to accessing Amazon-made and distributed titles like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Transparent, app users can browse partner content and watch previously purchased and newly rented programs.

Apple TV is also supporting live sports in the U.S. through a new dedicated Sports tab in the device’s own app. Users can follow their favourite teams and turn on game day notifications, alerting them to tune in to a match before it begins. The app can also track live matches to let streamers know when a team they follow is in a tight game.

“The Sports tab in the Apple TV app makes it even easier for fans in the US to track the teams, games and moments that are important to them,” said Cue.

The new tab will only be available for American Apple TV users, and no word yet on if they’ll be rolling out the feature to other countries.

While Apple is embracing Amazon, Google is shutting it down. The search giant pulled Amazon Echo Show and Fire TV from its YouTube app yesterday. The move was somewhat of a response to Amazon not carrying Google products on its e-commerce channels, according to a statement by the company.
