SingularityU’s Canadian Summit Heads to Edmonton for 2019
After launching in Toronto last year, the SingularityU Canada Summit is heading west.
The well-known global conference is moving to Edmonton for 2019, taking place on April 23 and 24. The two days will feature keynote discussions, workshops and breakout discussions, bringing in some of Canada’s top minds in the innovation and technology world. Just like the first year, next year’s edition will focus on emerging industries such as artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, biotechnology and digital medicine.
“With the inaugural SingularityU Canada summit last year, we saw the true strength of the Canadian tech and innovation community,” said Oren Berkovich, president and CEO of SingularityU Canada. “In choosing to come to Alberta, we are expanding the conversation and the community, to share the best of Canadian and international technology, and to highlight the leaders, creators, and innovators who are shaping Alberta, Canada, and the world.”
The inaugural SingularityU Canada Summit was held in October 2017, and one of its most interesting aspects was an explorable lab full of cutting-edge technologies, such as Pond Technologies‘ bioreactor that turns algae into clean energy. It also featured the launch of an X-PRIZE focused on Alzheimer’s, led by a Canadian doctor.
One interesting aspect to look forward to could be an update on other X-PRIZEs. Peter Diamandis, the founder of both the X Prize Foundation and Singularity University, will likely be on-hand in Edmonton and could shed some light on the progress of the carbon X-PRIZE, which has four Canadian finalists duking it out with six other companies to have a shot at $20 million.
The 2019 SingularityU Canada Summit will work closely with the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation to plan the event, as well as EPCOR and ATB Financial.
“Edmonton is becoming a primary mover in the global tech community. And it is happening fast,” said Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson. “Google has invested in Edmonton. Stantec just opened its door to the largest tower in Canada west of Toronto. We have the University of Alberta, NAIT and the Advanced Technology Centre as well as numerous tech-led companies all leading the way in advanced research and innovation right here in Edmonton.”
